Oak Hill Academy is a co-educational, college-preparatory boarding school for grades 8–12, founded in 1878 and set on a 240-acre campus in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Mouth of Wilson, Virginia. It is famous for its basketball program and for a student body drawn from across the United States and around the world — international students make up about a third of the school.

That beautiful, distraction-free setting is also remote. The campus sits about two and a half hours from Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), and there is no Uber, Lyft or taxi service in Mouth of Wilson. The closest town with hotels, restaurants and a Walmart is West Jefferson, North Carolina, about 25 minutes away — which is exactly where Ashe County Livery is based.

Day 1 — Arrive

  1. Your driver meets you at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) and loads every bag.
  2. A comfortable ride of about two and a half hours into the Blue Ridge Mountains to Oak Hill Academy to drop off your student.
  3. On to West Jefferson, about 25 minutes away, and check in at the West Jefferson Hotel. Walk to dinner downstairs at OH Restaurant & Bar or anywhere downtown.

Day 2 — Settle In & Head Home

  1. Hotel pickup and a stop at the Walmart Supercenter in West Jefferson for dorm supplies.
  2. Back to Oak Hill to deliver the supplies. Your driver waits while you help your student settle in and say goodbye.
  3. The ride back to Charlotte airport for your flight home — or to a Charlotte hotel if you fly out the next morning.

West Jefferson is a charming small mountain town in Ashe County, North Carolina, and the closest place to Oak Hill Academy to sleep, eat and shop. Its walkable downtown is full of murals, art galleries, local shops, cafes and restaurants, with Mount Jefferson rising right behind it.

The West Jefferson Hotel is our first recommendation for Oak Hill parents. It is a fully restored historic landmark in the very center of downtown at 5 West Main Street, with 17 individually designed rooms, breakfast included, a seasonal rooftop bar with mountain views, and OH Restaurant & Bar right downstairs.
