5 Questions to Ask Any Transportation Company

The High Country has plenty of people willing to drive your guests for money. Far fewer are licensed and insured to do it. These five questions tell you which one you’re talking to — before you hand over a deposit.

1Can you send me your certificate of insurance?

A licensed carrier can email it the same day — every one of our clients who asks gets ours.

Why it matters: if they stall, redirect, or say “we’re fully covered” without producing paper, assume there is no commercial for-hire policy behind the promise.

2Do your vehicles carry for-hire plates?

North Carolina requires for-hire registration to carry passengers for money. It’s visible on the plate.

Why it matters: a personal-plated van hauling paying guests is operating outside the law — and outside its insurance.

3Are you a registered business, or an individual?

Ask for the legal business name. A website and a phone number are not a company.

Why it matters: if something goes wrong with an individual operator, there’s often no entity, no policy, and no recourse.

4Does your insurance cover paid passenger transport?

This is the question that separates real carriers from side hustles.

Why it matters: personal auto policies — and ordinary commercial auto policies — exclude for-hire passenger service. In an accident, their carrier can deny the claim outright. You and your guests would not be covered.

5What exactly is in the price?

Hours, vehicles, mileage, gratuity, and what happens if the night runs long.

Why it matters: a price far below everyone else usually means fewer hours, a smaller vehicle, no insurance, or a bill that grows on the day.
